Your Baby’s Safety: Preventing Falls (Inpatient)

We want your baby to be safe from falls in the hospital. Here is how we can partner with you to keep your baby safe.

These things can cause your baby to fall:
  • Baby is left alone in an open warmer or in a crib with the rails down.
  • Baby is held by a drowsy or sleeping parent.
  • The area around the warmer or crib is cluttered.
  • Moving baby in or out of warmer or crib without assistance.
To help keep your baby safe, our staff will:
  • Keep the area near your baby clutter-free.
  • Close warmer doors or raise crib rails.
  • Help you move your baby in or out of the warmer or crib.
  • Strap your baby in when using a bouncy seat, highchair or other equipment.
  • Share helpful tips with you on how to keep your baby safe.

Here are some ways you can keep your baby safe:

  • Ask a nurse if you need help holding or moving your baby in or out of the warmer or crib.
  • If you leave your baby’s bedside (even for a minute) close the warmer or lift the crib rails.
  • Keep the bed/crib rails raised when your child is in bed.
  • Stay alert while holding your baby. If you start to feel sleepy, put your baby back in the warmer or crib.  Let your baby’s nurse know if you need help.
  • Sit in a stable chair with locked wheels while holding your baby.
  • Keep the area around your baby’s warmer or crib neat and free of clutter.
  • Make sure your baby is strapped in when using a bouncy seat, stroller, highchair or other equipment.
