When to Call the Doctor After Bypass Surgery
Call your healthcare provider if you have any of the following symptoms:
- Angina or chest pain symptoms like those you felt before surgery (call 911)
- Fever of 100.4˚F (38˚C) or higher, or as directed by your healthcare provider
- Unexplained chills or sweating
- Shortness of breath or trouble breathing unrelieved by rest
- Sharp pain in the chest on taking a deep breath
- Pain that is getting worse despite pain medications
- Belly (abdominal) pain, nausea or vomiting that does not go away
- Fast or irregular heartbeat
- Severe headaches
- Blood in your urine or stool
- Dizziness or fainting
- Swelling, warmth, redness, oozing or drainage at the incision site(s)
- Unexplained bruising or bleeding
- Continued sensation of motion or clicking sounds in your breastbone
- Sudden weight gain. This means 3 or more pounds in 2 days or 5 or more pounds in 5 days.
- Increased swelling of the arms or legs, especially on the side where the vein was not removed
Things to remember
- Do not drive while taking narcotics or sleeping aids.
- Be sure to tell your dentist and/or healthcare provider about your surgery before any dental work or medical procedure. You may need to take antibiotics to prevent possible infections.
- Contact your healthcare provider if you ever have any questions or concerns.
