Your Child’s Orthosis
Your child’s doctor recommends an orthosis for your child.
The orthosis can:
☐ Protect after injury or surgery
☐ Improve positioning of the arm or hand
☐ Keep your child’s injury clean

Check for:

Skin irritation (redness, blistering, chaffing)

Decrease in circulation (blueness, cold fingers)

Increase in pain, swelling or discomfort
If any of the above is noted, call the therapy department at (212) 598-6248 to request an orthosis adjustment.
The orthosis should fit snug, but not too tight. Loosen the straps if deep strap marks appear or if swelling occurs on either side of the straps.
How to care for your child’s orthosis:
☐ Wash with warm water, alcohol or baby-wipes. Do NOT use hot water.
☐ Wash by hand with soap and water. Air dry.
Caution:

Keep the orthosis away from heat (examples: radiator, stove, dashboard of car, window sill) as it may melt and lose shape

Note: Wear and tear over time is normal. If this happens, please get a new prescription for another orthosis from your doctor and make an appointment.
