Your Baby’s Pavlik Harness
A Pavlik harness is a soft brace for your baby’s legs. It helps support your baby’s hips so they stay straight, stable, and develop in the correct way. It is most common for infants from 0-6 months with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) or with a femur break (fracture) to wear a Pavlik Harness.
Will the Pavlik Harness cause your baby discomfort or pain?
The Pavlik harness is dynamic, meaning it bends as your baby moves. If the harness fits your baby right and you take care of it, the harness won’t cause any pain.
When should your baby wear the Pavlik Harness?
Your baby should wear the harness 24 hours a day, unless the doctor gave you other instructions.
What clothing do you dress your baby in?
Your baby can wear a soft onesie under the harness. Over the harness your baby can wear a one-piece sleep sack or larger-size clothing. This lets your baby move their legs. Avoid any clothes that bring your baby’s knees together (ex. pants or anything with a waistband).
How do you wash your baby when they are wearing the harness?
Do NOT bathe your baby in a baby bath, while they are wearing the harness. Sponge baths are best. When your baby’s hip is stable or the doctor approves, you will be able to bathe your child.
How do you care for your baby’s skin when they are wearing the harness?
Do NOT put lotion on your baby’s skin, where the harness touches the skin. This can hurt your baby’s skin.
-
Make sure to check your baby’s genital (groin) and behind your baby’s knees. It can get sweaty or damp (moisture) here and cause rash or irritation.
-
Each time you change your baby’s diaper, wipe behind the knees and in the groin with a dry cloth to decrease moisture.
-
Several times a day, you should check your baby’s skin around the edges of the harness for redness or irritation.
What position do you put your baby in while they wear the Pavlik Harness?
While your baby is wearing the harness, make sure they are on a flat surface, laying on their back. Their knees will fall outward and to the side. This lets their hips develop properly. If your baby prefers swaddling, you can swaddle your baby’s arms and upper body. Do NOT swaddle their legs.
When should you call the doctor about the Pavlik Harness?
Call the doctor if:
-
Your baby cries without stopping and you are unable to comfort them.
-
Your baby has red or irritated skin.
-
Your baby is not able to kick or move one or both legs.
-
You have other questions or concerns.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call your baby’s orthopedist and ask to speak to a member of your baby’s care team.
