Making Mealtime Better
Sometimes it can be hard for children to eat. They may have trouble chewing or swallowing, refuse to eat or try new foods, or fuss at mealtime. Over time, this can be frustrating for both parent and child. Here are some helpful tips for making mealtimes more enjoyable and relaxing.

Watch the time
  • Mealtime should be 30 minutes or less.
Take a seat
  • Make sure your child sits in a chair at the table.  Sit down with your child.
Avoid snacking all day long
  • To make mealtimes easier, avoid giving your child food between meals and scheduled snacks.
  • Offer your child something to eat every 2 ½ to 3 hours, so your child will be hungry and want to eat.
Set the plate for success
  • At each meal, offer two foods your child likes and one new food. Your child may not eat the new food and that’s okay.
Keep things easy
  • Offer your child what the rest of the family is eating.
Show them how
  •  Eat with your child and show them that eating can be fun!
Watch the water
  • Offer water between meals. This may prevent your child from filling up on liquids during meals.
Do not force
  • If your child refuses to eat, take a break.
  • Your child will have another chance to eat in 2 ½ to 3 hours.
Stay positive
  • Mealtime should be enjoyable and stress-free. Stay calm during the meal.  Your child will know if you are stressed and upset.
Your Role
  • Sit your child in his/her seat when it is mealtime.
  • Prepare and offer food for your child.
Your Child’s Role
  • To decide what to eat and how much (from the choices you offer).
