Mixing Instructions for High-Calorie Breast Milk: Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease

Sometimes a baby needs more calories than breast milk can provide. Increasing the calories in breast milk by adding formula powder can help your baby get the energy they need to grow and thrive. Breast milk is about 20 calories per ounce. To increase the calories to _____ per ounce, please follow the directions below.

Name of formula to add to breast milk: Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease

Preparing Your Baby’s Bottle

  • Check the formula can for the “use by” (expiration) date and any damage. Do not use if the date has passed or if the can is damaged (bent, dented, etc.).
  • Wash your hands with warm soapy water. Dry with a clean cloth.
  • Wash and dry the top of the formula can before you open it.
  • Clean all surfaces you will use. Clean bottles, nipples and other utensils, such as measuring spoons, you will need.
  • Once open, powdered formula is only okay for 30 days.
  • Write the full date that you open it on the can of powdered formula.
  • Using the recipe listed in the tables in the "Mixing Instructions" section below, pour the correct amount of breast milk into a clean bottle BEFORE adding the powdered formula.
  • Then, add the correct amount of powdered formula to the breast milk.
  • Cap bottle and gently swirl until all the lumps are gone.
  • If the breast milk is cold, you may need to swirl it again after warming. This will dissolve all the lumps.

Before Feeding Your Baby

  • To warm, run the bottle under warm water. If using an electric bottle warmer, follow the manufacturer’s directions.
  • For your baby’s safety, avoid warming breast milk using a microwave. It can get too hot or heat some parts and not others. It can burn your baby.
  • Test the temperature of the milk by shaking out a few drops onto the inside of your wrist. The milk should be warm, not hot.
  • Once you begin a feeding, use the breast milk within 1 hour. Throw away any breast milk that your baby does not finish.
  • If your baby gets breast milk through a feeding tube (enteral feed) via pump, use the breast milk within 4 hours.

Additional Instructions

  • To make sure your baby is getting the right amount of calories, it’s important to use well marked measuring spoons.
  • Scoop formula into the correct sized measuring spoon and level with a knife. The formula should not be packed into the measuring spoon, as that will give your baby too much formula.
  • For your child’s health and safety, do not change the recipe before discussing it with your child’s medical team.
