Who qualifies for a discount?

Financial assistance (help) is available for patients with limited incomes who do not have health insurance. Help is also available for patients who have used up all their health insurance benefits. This is for every New York State resident who seeks needed medical services. And for every person who needs emergency services at any of the hospitals in our system as well.

What are the income limits?

The amount of the discount varies. The discount is based on your income and family size. If you have no benefits, incurred deductibles, co-pays or co-insurance, please visit ourNYULH Financial Assistance website.

You can also visit the New York State (NYS) Department of Health’s websiteto find the most recent NYS Federal Poverty Levels (FPL). This way you can see what discount level applies to you based on your income level and family household size.

What if I do not meet the income limits?

If you cannot pay your bill, NYU Langone can offer you a payment plan. The amount you pay is based on your income. This amount will not go over 10% of your gross (without taxes taken) monthly income.

Can someone explain the discount? Can someone help me apply?

One of our financial counselors can tell you if you qualify and help you apply for free or low cost health insurance. You may qualify for Medicaid or a NY State of Health insurance plan. If the counselor finds that you do not qualify for low cost insurance, they will help you apply for a discount. They will also help you fill out all the forms and tell you which documents you need to bring. If you do not speak English (or if you are not fluent), someone will help you in your native language.

What do I need to apply for a discount?

The financial counselor will provide you with an application or you can print one out from our NYULH Financial Assistance website. Just complete the application and submit it to one of our Financial Counseling locations.

What services are covered?

The financial assistance does not cover: cosmetic procedures, services provided by doctors and other providers who treat you at our hospitals but are not employed and bill separately. These include:

  • NYU School of Medicine doctors in their private practices
  • Anesthesiologists
  • Radiologists
  • Nurses on private duty
  • Added charges such as telephone, TVs and private room fees
  • Ambulette service providers
  • Home care providers
  • Procedures for patients who are enrolled in HMO/commercial insurance plans which do not contract with our Hospital

How much do I have to pay?

Discounts are determined based on the income test of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) mentioned above. You can pay as little as $0 if your income is less than 600% of the FPL and you meet all the other qualifications to be eligible.

Our financial counselor will give you details about your specific discount(s) once we process your application.

How do I get the discount?

You need to fill out an application form. As soon as we get the needed information (your residency, income and family size), we can process your application for a discount.

You can apply for a discount before your appointment, when you come to the hospital to get care or when the bill comes in the mail. Send your completed application form to any of the locations listed above.

Our patients will have at least 240 days (almost 8 months) from the date of service or discharge to apply for financial assistance.

How will I know if I was approved for the discount?

We will send you a letter within 30 days after you complete and submit your application. This letter will let you know if you have been approved and what type of discount you qualify for.

What if I receive a bill while I’m waiting to hear if I can get a discount?

You do not need to pay an NYU Langone bill while your application for a discount is being reviewed. If your application is not approved, by law we will tell you the reason in writing. Also, we provide you a means to appeal the decision to a higher level within the Hospital.

What if I have a problem I cannot resolve with the Hospital?

You may call the New York State Department of Health complaint hotline at 1-800-804-5447.
