Routine Electroencephalography (EEG): Instructions

What is an EEG?

The brain’s electrical activity changes every second. An electroencephalography (EEG) test records a sample of the brain's electrical brain activity over a period of 25 to 60 minutes. During the procedure, electrodes consisting of small discs with wires, are placed on the scalp with conductive paste. These electrodes detect the tiny electrical charges that result from brain activity. An essential component of your Routine EEG is a video recording of you during your test. This is to help us understand how changes in your body's actions might be connected to changes in your brain. The viewing and use of this video recording is limited to medical or teaching purposes. The recording is the property of NYU Langone Hospitals.

What are the Different Types of EEG Testing?

  • Routine EEG– The test itself is painless and does not require any injections or special medications. Electrodes will be placed on your scalp using a paste that will be removed before you leave. During the test you will rest quietly in a chair or reclining bed. You will be asked to open and close your eyes at different times. You will also be asked some simple questions. During the test you may be asked to look at flashing lights and breathe faster and more deeply. This will help your doctor see how your brain reacts.

  • Sleep Deprived EEG – Follow the same preparation as for a Routine EEG, but stay awake as long as you can the night before. Try to stay awake without stimulants so that you will be sleepy and hopefully fall asleep during the test the next day.

How Do I Prepare for the EEG?

  • Shampoo your hair before the appointment.

  • Do not use any gels or any other products on your hair. Make sure your hair is clean, without any remaining hair styling products. Remove braids, wigs or weaves.

  • Eat your usual meals and take any needed medication before the test, unless instructed by your doctor.

  • If the test is ordered as a, "Sleep Deprived EEG", you should stay awake as late as possible the night before the test. Stay awake all night if you can. You should try to stay awake without the use of stimulants such as coffee, energy drinks, or other aids.

What Are the Risks of the Test?

  • The EEG has been used for many years and is considered a safe and painless procedure. The electrodes do not produce any electric current. They only record activity.

  • There may be minor risks depending upon your specific medical condition. Be sure to discuss any concerns with your doctor before the procedure.

  • You may have skin irritation or redness at the places where the electrodes were placed. This usually goes away within several hours.

  • When the test is over, the electrodes will be removed and the paste cleaned off. You may want to wash your hair when you get home to remove any remaining paste.
