Pre-Operative (Pre-Op) Instructions for Adults

Medical Clearance and Pre-Testing:
You must send us all your clearance paperwork and pre-testing results at least one week before your scheduled surgery. We will also give you a Medical Clearance form to fill out. If we do not receive all these documents on time, we may have to cancel your surgery.
You must schedule the appointment(s) for the pre-testing you need. Commonly needed tests are:
- Bloodwork
- EKG (a painless test of the heart)
- Chest X-ray

If you need any additional tests done, our Pre-Testing Office will call you. Their telephone number is 718-630-7192.

The Day Before Your Procedure:
A Registered Nurse (RN) will call you sometime after 4:00PM and tell you what time you need to arrive at the hospital. (If your surgery is scheduled for a Monday, we will call you on Friday afternoon.)
Please make sure we have your telephone number as well as one other telephone number where you can be reached.
If you have not been contacted by 7:00PM, please call the Operating Room (OR) at: 718-630-7490.
The Night Before Your Procedure:
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.
Do not:
- Eat any food
- Drink any liquids (coffee, tea, water, etc.)
- Chew gum or eat candy
The Day of Your Procedure:
Plan to arrive at one (1) hour before your scheduled procedure time, unless you are instructed otherwise.
When you arrive, please come to Station 2-44 to register.
Only one (1) family member may stay with you in the Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU). Your other loved ones may wait in our Surgical Waiting Room located in Station 2-44.
If your doctor has instructed you to take your medication on the morning of your procedure, you may do so with a small sip of water. Do not take any medication unless your health care provider tells you to do so.
Please bring:
- A list of all your medications
- Your insurance card and a photo ID
- Any X-rays, lab test results, medical clearance forms, consent forms, or other paperwork from the surgeon who will be performing the procedure
Do NOT bring:
- Jewelry, money, credit cards, electronics (tablet computers, laptops, etc.) or any other valuables. (You may bring your cell phone.)
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
- Make sure that you have a responsible person over the age of 18 to bring you home after your procedure.
